Fun Facts & Things to Do
Aside from apples, Donnybrook is also very well known for it’s beautiful Donnybrook Stone. The stone is featured in many fences and pathways, and integral to many of the historic buildings in the town. There’s the Soldiers Memorial Hall built around 1919 from locally quarried Donnybrook Stone to commemorate the soldiers who fought in the First World War. Now largely used as a community hall.
Beautiful All Saints Church on the main road built in 1906 is also a perfect example of this magnificent natural building material. Due to its beauty and staying power, it also graces landmark buildings all over Australia including Federation Square in Melbourne, the WA Supreme Court, Claremont Teachers College, the chapel at Guildford Grammar school, St. Mary’s Cathedral, the General Post Office and the Commonwealth Bank in Forest Place to name just a few.
If you’re an active getaway holiday maker, the Donnybrook Balingup Shire has lots to offer you.
You could walk a section of the Bibbulmun Track. This iconic ‘bucket list’ walk trail passes through the Donnybrook Balingup region on its way to Albany. Balingup is a popular base and stopover for walkers with the Visitors Centre, Post Office, General store and many accommodation properties welcoming walkers with ‘refueling’ options and track drop-offs/pick-ups.
If you’re a mountain biking enthusiast you can hit the Munda Biddi Trail – a world-class, nature-based, off-road cycling experience. This unique 1000km trail has been built through an undeveloped natural corridor that stretches through unspoiled forest and bushland.
A great accommodation option for biking holidays is Cycletrek in Lowden featuring eco-accommodation and it’s own bike courses. www.cycletrek.com.au
With the full gambit of gentle to challenging terrain and year-round cycling weather, you have the ideal setting for off-road cycling at Linga Longa Bike Park – WA’s best Enduro Park and situated in Balingup. www.lingalongabikepark.com
